eyebrow: strata

Reassembled improvisations by this trumpet and drum duo become atmospheric epics, beguiling the listener with haunting, dreamlike soundscapes. Hailing from Bristol, Pete Judge and Paul Wigens — in addition to playing with groups such as acclaimed jazz combo Get The Blessing — have released five albums as Eyebrow. The latest, Strata (2017), is embedded in electronics and effects, and that investment has paid off. Layered horns mysteriously float over a steady beat; strange violin scrapings add to the ambience. The result is eerie and trance-inducing, with an occasional trip-hop feel. Reminiscent of Tryptical-era Ben Neill, yet distinctly it’s own animal, this genre-defying album is an engaging adventure from start to finish.
